The Decropping of an Avatar

My Grandson Colin

This is Colin, my second grandchild and first of three grandsons, born into the wilderness on September 7th, 2002. My daughter and happy mama, Miranda, is the photographer using my camera. She’s not too familiar with the camera so it came out a little blurry but it is one of my absolute favorite photos none the less. That is joy you see in me as opposed to a pose. And I love the expression on Colin’s face as HE contemplates me.

I think childbirth and newborns are the closest we can get to the divine while here in the wilderness.

So yes, my avatar is almost six years old.

But I am not changing it anytime soon.

Because every time I see it I am reminded of an uncropped image I saw that day.

(Alece’s childbirth post prompted me on this one)

  1. very cool! I have never thought about the background behind folks’ avarts. What a great story…I can see the joy in your face!

  2. Thanks Nate. I, on the other hand, often wonder about the settings of folk’s avatar pics. I am a little weird that way.

  3. Whaddyaknow – there IS more to you than meets the eye… ;-)

    (Big surprise – Not!)

If you are gonna get post ideas from my blog comments – i want 50% of the royalties!

    I’ll be SO rich!

  4. There is so much that makes up our thumbnail sketchs.

My poems grossed $74 last year, which I failed to report so please don’t tell the IRS.

And don’t quit yer day job.

    Thanks love!

  5. Ric,
You know I so badly want to comment about the difference between your avatar and a recent photo you put up. But I really can’t tell a difference and I’m jealous.
My avatar is cropped from a photo taken at my niece’s wedding reception two years ago. I’ve put on a few pounds, lost a few hairs and seen a lot more hair turn gray since then.
So are you suggesting we use a recent photo as an avatar and, if so, would it still qualify as an avatar? Wouldn’t that just be an ordinary mugshot?

  6. Sam, no I’m not suggesting anything other than your avatar should be something you like… which is really a non-suggestion. Thanks for the compliment about my agelessness.

  7. Haha! I love it.

you know what, this would be a great series of posts…Hmmm you’ve given me an idea!

  8. Brent, umm… Tag, you’re it?

  9. Very cool pic. But your avatar annoys me. Grandpas shouldn’t look so young.

  10. Hi Christian. You would be surprised how many people refuse to believe my grandfatherhoodship!

  11. Oh dang, is that sweet or what?!

I love the idea of the cropped image and like Brent it got some ideas bouncing through my head….you might have started something here fella!

  12. Love the picture Ric. I do notice that on your picture on the “Break Time” post your hair and beard do look a little grayer. It must have been the light setting on the camera. :)

Thanks for posting the whole picture. I can see why the face on your avatar shows so much joy.

  13. Hi Anita, yes that’s me, Mr. Sweet. haha. So this may be the first time I’ve ever started anything. Well, except for that time I threw up in the movie theater…

    Just kidding.

    I didn’t start that.

  14. Ed, Grayer! Grayer!! Well, I think I got some ahh… paint and dry wall dust on me… that can be the ONLY explanation. Speaking of gray hairs, where’s your pic? flickr?

    Glad you like the picture.

  15. That is a precious photo!

  16. Hey Terri, yes, yes it is. :)

  17. you look smashing in orange!!!

we need a photo of the two of you today now :)

  18. Tam, I like to think I crush in orange. And that’s an idea…hmmm

  19. A smart, poet man in glasses simply rocks. Who cares about the avatar not being recent! :-)

  20. Selena, I will have to post my 8th grade picture and see if you still feel the same way. haha.

  21. I need to buy stock in whatever company makes those hospital baby blankets. Apparently every hospital in the known world uses them. ;-)

  22. Hahaha! I think you might be onto to something there… While you’re at it, you might want a couple of shares in ORANGE shirts. I hear they’re all the rage. Welcome trans, er ah.. John.

  23. speaking of connecting the dots…

It took a LONG time!! But it was really fun. ;)

  26. WOW!! That’s pretty amazing! I like the orange shirt – nice touch! haha! I may have to put that on a business card! You are really good.

  27. Yay!! I’m so glad you like it…or that you’re polite. ;)

  28. HAHA! That’s me! Unless you try to serve me raw onion. Yuck. Patti said I look a little black. I said Thank you. ;)

  29. Wow! Now I’m wondering what I’d see if we all de-crop our avatars! :-)

Mine is a two-pic avatar. First, I traced my head, then pasted it on a picture of our ricefields. Then I cropped it. :-)

Thank you for sharing that one. It’s a lovely photo. Heartwarming even.

  30. Maybe this one will resemble you better – Let me know what Patti thinks. ;)

You don’t like raw onions? You could never be a Texan!

  31. Brainteaser, Thanks for the heartwarming compliment. It would be cool to see the de-crop photos. I bet there’s a lot of stories out there. Yours sounds interesting!

Michelle, I think its awesome! I will share with Patti later. You, Michelle, have an eye. And yeah, I just do not understand the raw onion thing.

  32. Thanks Judi!
